Common Fish Diseases, Their Causes and Treatments

Having an aquarium in your home or office with various types of ornamental fish in it is a matter of great pride and addition of beauty. However, it also brings a great responsibility to keep your fish healthy and free from diseases.

To accomplish this, you should know about the various diseases of fish so that you can know their symptoms and get a treatment for your beloved fish on time. Here are some common fish diseases.

Fish Ick (Ich)

 Symptoms :

  • Skin filled with spots resembling white sand or salt grains
  • Possibly slightly raised
  • Clamped fins
  • Skin irritation and thereby scratching against objects
  • Panting at the surface of water

 Cause :

Typically fish, including cold water aquarium fish, that are stressed fall prey to this disease. Stress may be due to sudden changes in the temperature and pH of water.

 Treatment :

Turn UV sterilizer off and take out filter carbon. Add one tablet of Tetra Lifeguard to every 5 gallons of water. Treatment should be continued for 5 days and should be repeated till symptoms get cleared.

There can even be secondary infections that can be treated with antibiotics or standard cures such as Tetra Fungus Guard or Tetra Ick Guard. Steady temperature and good quality of water along with using aquarium salt will help keep infections at bay.

Ragged Tail Fin and Rotting of Fin, Tail, and Mouth

Symptoms :

  • A progressive decline of tail and/or fins
  • Frayed or discolored fins

Cause :

The rot of tail and fin can be caused by a bacterial infection in fish that are susceptible – those who are attacked and injured by fin-squeezing tank mates. This happens in poorly maintained aquariums.

Treatment :

Turn UV sterilizer off and take out filter carbon. Add one tablet of Tetra Lifeguard to every 5 gallons of water. Treatment should be continued for 5 days and should be repeated till symptoms get cleared.

If an infection is the cause of clamped fins, the first line of treatment should be a multipurpose treatment such as Tetra Fungus Guard. Adding 1 tablespoon of aquarium salt per gallon of water is also a good practice to prevent clamped fins.

Fungus

Symptoms :

  • A gray or whitish growth on the skin and/or fins is an initial symptom
  • A cottony growth indicating untreated fungus
  • Fungus goes on eating the body of the fish because of which the fish dies.

Cause :

Fish, that is already in a vulnerable state due to serious health problems or attacks like a physical injury, bacterial infection or parasites, develop fungus.

Treatment :

Turn UV sterilizer off and take out filter carbon. Add one tablet of Tetra Lifeguard to every 5 gallons of water. Treatment should be continued for 5 days and should be repeated till symptoms get cleared. Bacterial infections are often misdiagnosed as fungal. Hence fungicides and antibiotics are common medications.

Tetra Fungus Guard consists of formalin and malachite green. Add one tablet per 10 gallons once in every 4 days till symptoms clear. Take out activated carbon and perform partial water changes during treatments.

Plus there are many diseases like a clamped fin (fins folded against the body), dropsy (protruding scales), anchor worms, body flukes and many more. Consult your vet regularly to find signs and symptoms of any diseases on time and get them treated so that you can enjoy the company of your adorable fish for longer.
