African Cichlids Fish
African cichlids are a well-known species of fish that are found in various parts of Africa, Southern America and in some parts of Asia.
There are different types of fish within the cichlids family. Cichlids are often classified as secondary freshwater wish.
This is because their ancestors used to live in marine environments. However, cichlids later moved to freshwater and therefore possess certain features resembling those of wrasses, parrotfish etc that are marine fish.
African Cichlids come a number of different shapes, sizes, and colors. They can be categorized as Malawi Cichlids. Some of them can be very friendly and amiable but some can be quite aggressive.
The aggressive ones are surely not suitable to be kept in a tank as they do not get along with their tank mates. They are best left alone.
The picture shows the auras. This one is not so friendly but is surely popular due to its unique shape and varying colors. The males and females have opposite colors.
The males have a body colored brown or black with light blue or yellow stripes while the females have the opposite of this. They have light blue or yellow colored body.
Keeping both the genders in one tank may seem a good idea. However, one must be careful as the females can be a bit aggressive while the males may exude sheer intolerance.
This strikingly dark colored cichlid is a called Melanochromis and is a Lake Malawi African Cichlid the species is found only recently discovered by Bowers and Stauffer in 1997.
They belong to a group called Mbunas. They are quite aggressive and have a long body with a snout and dorsal fin.
Due to its small and size and magnificent color, this type of cichlid is a perfect candidate for an aquarium. They have an electric blue color with horizontal stripes giving them an elegant look.

They can change color according to the mood and are one of those species that can express a very strong display of colors when excited.
The Dogtooth cichlid is so called because it has a unique set of the tooth with unicuspid teeth rather than bicuspid as its other counterparts.
They are small-to-medium sized fish and are a close relative of the Auratus. Is one fairly easy to take care of? However, they can be very aggressive and therefore may only be kept with a little group of other peaceful fish in a tank.
the African Butterfly Peacock – a well-known African cichlid that is popular for its bright varying colors, hence the name butterfly peacock. They have a very large size making them biggest species among the cichlid family. They can up to 23 cm long.
Tey has different colors of blues, reds, and yellows and has wrinkles that can be used to identify them. They usually need a large space if they are to be kept as pets.
